چکیده

Abstract: In this paper we extend the theory of Radio Frequency (RF) propagation as it relates to propagation within metal circular pipes. This work is motivated by a need to understand the operation of UHF Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) systems when the tags are placed within the pipes. These circular pipes are shown to be similar to metal tube waveguides which are hollow. We derive the Bessel function that is used to identify the propagation constants, the different transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes, cut-off frequencies and the multimode attenuation. These parameters are used within the theory to identify operating limitations of passive RFID systems in hollow metal pipes. A comprehensive general theory is developed to enumerate the workings of passive RFID systems in circular metal pipes. Analytical evaluations are used to visualise the tags within the metal pipes and to validate the theory presented in this paper.

Low Power Analog Front-end for the UHF Passive RFID Tag

The RFID is one of the representative wireless identification systems. Due to more complicated data management and faster processing speed, the RFID system has been widely employed. Compared to the battery embedded active tag, the passive tag has many advantages, such as a long life time, a small size, and a low cost [1]. But the passive tag must harvest its operational energy from the radiated...

A Frequency Diverse Gen2 RFID System with Isolated Continuous Wave Emitters

The “Gen2” specification for UHF passive RFID systems released by EPCglobal has become an intense research interest. A Gen2 tag derives its power from the RF wave emitted by a Gen2 RFID reader and responds its modulated backscatter signals to the reader. Due to the large propagation loss, the accessible range of a Gen2 tag is hence limited. Moreover, the readability of a Gen2 tag is often influ...

Wave Motion and Stop-Bands in Pipes with Helical Characteristics Using Wave Finite Element Analysis

Pipes are widely used in many industrial and mechanical applications and devices. Although there are many different constructions according to the specific application and device, these can show helical pattern, such as spiral pipes, wire-reinforced pipes/shells, spring-suspension, and so on. Theoretical modelling of wave propagation provides a prediction about the dynamic behavior, and it is f...

Interference Analysis and Experimental Results of Passive UHF RFID Systems in Sub-1GHz Wireless Communications Systems

As ultra high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, a smart recognition technology, has been gradually spreading to various applications, and several sub-1GHz wireless technologies are being standardized and developed. As such technologies operate at a specific frequency band (902–928MHz industrial, scientific, and medical bands), the impact of RF interference due to...

Design of Passive UHF RFID Tag Antennas Using Metamaterial-Based Structures and Techniques

Metamaterials (Marques et al., 2008; Eleftheriades & Balmain, 2005; Herraiz-Martinez et al. 2009) are one of the many new technologies being adopted to improve the performance of radio frequency identification (RFID) systems (Finkenzeller, 2003; Stupf et al., 2007). In particular, metamaterial-based antenna designs are being used more frequently to improve the read range and reduce the size of ...
